Meet John Spragens

A lifelong Nashvillian, John advocates for people who have been hurt or killed by medical malpractice, as well as whistleblowers, victims of discrimination and abuse, and others who were defrauded, injured, or killed by corporate misconduct or individual wrongdoing.

John is a veteran of national class action and whistleblower litigation against corporations that manufacture dangerous and defective products, conspire to fix prices, and misuse taxpayer funds. He took on Big Tobacco, fighting for families of former smokers in federal jury trials against cigarette companies that engaged in a 50-year conspiracy to misrepresent the dangers of smoking cigarettes and intentionally engineer the design of cigarettes to make them more addictive. In one trial, a jury awarded his client — who had begun smoking at age 14 — $27,010,000.14. More recently, John represented the city of Nashville and other Tennessee counties in litigation against the pharmaceutical industry for its part in creating the nationwide opioid epidemic.

John has also represented robocall victims in cases under the federal Telephone Consumer Protection Act (TCPA), with one such case leading to a $10.5 million settlement in 2017. He has represented consumers in national class actions against corporations that sell defective products and whistleblowers alleging fraud in government contracting. He currently represents a former Nashville television news anchor in a gender and age discrimination lawsuit against her former employer.

Chosen by the American Bar Association as a “Top 40 Young Lawyer” for 2018, John was named to the National Trial Lawyers “Top 100” Tennessee Lawyers and as a Super Lawyers “Rising Star” for the Mid-South in 2016, 2017, and 2018.  He serves as an adjunct faculty member at Vanderbilt Law School, where he teaches “The Practice of Aggregate Litigation.”

Before founding Spragens Law PLC, John worked at a national class-action plaintiffs’ law firm and a large corporate defense firm in Nashville. He previously worked as communications director to U.S. Congressman Jim Cooper; law clerk to the Hon. Kevin H. Sharp, Former Chief Judge of the United States District Court for the Middle District of Tennessee; and a reporter and columnist at the Nashville Scene.  He is active in the Nashville community, where he serves on the Metropolitan Beer Permit Board, the board of Planned Parenthood of Tennessee and North Mississippi, and the Nashville Bar Foundation Leadership Forum Steering Committee. In 2018, he served as campaign treasurer for Nashville Public Defender Martesha Johnson’s historic election.
